PFLAG Makes $30,000 Gift To Positive Images

by Kathryn M. Miller

At a festive celebratory event of the youth group Positive Images, PFLAG-NB presented a certificate of appreciation and a $30,000 check to the organization.

The money, part of an inheritance received by PFLAG-NB, was given in memory of Arthur Carl (Ace) Matthews of Willits who died in April. It was announced that, in addition to the gift to Positive Images, PFLAG would also sponsor a youth scholarship fund named for Ace Matthews.

Arthur Carl (Ace) MatthewsMatthews, 78, was a former high school teacher and a college professor who started a radio station at Bemidji State University in Minnesota while he was on the theatrical staff. He served as radio station manager for 21 years before retiring.

According to his memorial he came to live in Willits in 1990 and was an active volunteer in the community, working with drama classes at Willits High School, teaching radio broadcasting. He also volunteered with the Police Activities League in both Willis and Ukiah.

Matthews' interest in young people is reflected in students of his who have "become stronger individuals, in turn contributing to their communities," his online memorial indicated.

His interest in PFLAG and Positive Images stemmed from attending a joint PFLAG-Positive Images Thanksgiving celebration some years ago, according to Positive Images founder Jim Foster, and being impressed with the display of self-esteem in the youth there.
